February 14, 2007 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 18-ranked Georgia Bulldogs open their home schedule on Friday at 2 p.m. when they take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the first day of action of the fourth annual Georgia Softball Classic. Winthrop is also slated to participate in the three-day tournament.
Georgia enters the tournament after posting a 4-2 showing last weekend in Lafayette, La., at the Louisiana Classic. The Bulldogs notched two wins against both McNeese State and Wichita State before dropping two games to tournament-host and then-No. 17-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette.
Kellie Middleton concluded tournament play at the Louisiana Classic with a .444 batting average after going 8-for-18 with a double, a home run, seven RBI and seven stolen bases. Middleton set a school and SEC single-game record on Sunday with five stolen bases against McNeese State. Sojourner Moody posted a team-high .538 batting average (7-for-13) for the weekend with six stolen bases, while Alison Horne hit .444 (8-for-18) with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI.
Western Kentucky captured the Best Western Tournament championship last weekend. The sophomore hurled a shutout against Arkansas and notched a win over No. 22 South Florida. Offensively, sophomore Rebecca Horesky and freshman Ashley Contreras are currently sporting the highest batting averages at .338 and .308, respectively.
Winthrop opens its season on Friday when it meets Western Kentucky at noon. The Eagles were recently picked to finish fourth in the Big South Conference despite returning seven starters. Tessa Thomas, the 2006 Big South Freshman of the Year, returns to pace the Eagles¹ offense along with All-Big South selections Laura Hill and Hilary Peacock.
