ATHENS, Ga. --- Former University of Georgia football coach and director of athletics Vince Dooley and current UGA gymnastics coach Suzanne Yoculan will receive two of the top awards at the annual Atlanta Sports Awards banquet Thursday at the Fox Theatre.
Sponsored by the Atlanta Sports Council, the black-tie event will recognize college, amateur, professional and high school athletes and coaches for excellence in athletic achievement in 2006.
Dooley will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award after a Hall of Fame football coaching career (1964-88) and award winning tenure at Director of Athletics (1979-2004). Yoculan will be named College Coach of the Year after leading the Georgia team to its second consecutive NCAA championship and seventh overall title.
UGA Basketball player Tasha Humphrey and gymnast Courtney Kupets are finalists for Collegiate Athlete of the Year while the gymnastics team is a finalist for Team of the Year.
Winners were determined by a vote of the Atlanta Sports Awards Voting Academy, whose members consist of local sports media, athletic administrators and corporate leaders.
In conjunction with the awards ceremony, a silent auction consisting of more than 70 sports memorabilia items, trips, ticket packages and other items is open to the public. Fans can bid on items online at AtlantaSportsAwards.com through Friday.
