Women's Tennis Welcomes In-State Rival Georgia Southern

February 13, 2007 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. --- The 17th-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team will take on in-state rival Georgia Southern on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex looking to extend its season record to 5-0.

The Bulldogs had last weekend off after their 4-0 start with all wins coming by either 7-0 or 6-1 margins. Two of those came over top-30 teams, including then-No. 28 Texas A&M and No. 6 Baylor.

“We’re really hoping to get an outdoor match in if the weather works out,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “Beyond that I feel like we’ve had a nice break, but it’s time to get back on the court and we’re looking forward to it.”

The Eagles enter the match with a 2-3 overall record. They are coming off a tough 4-3 loss at home to Georgia State. It was their second straight loss after dropping a 5-2 decision to Jacksonville at home a week earlier.

Georgia holds a 15-1 all-time series advantage over Georgia Southern. The last meeting was in 2006, resulting in a 7-0 Georgia victory. The Bulldogs have won the past 15 since dropping the first meeting in 1974, the lone time the Eagles took a win in the series.

The Bulldogs have been dominant in doubles competition so far this season. In four matches, Georgia has won 11 of 12 doubles contests and taken the doubles point in all of them to get off to an early lead.

In addition, six Georgia singles players are currently riding streaks of four or more wins, led by freshman Naoko Ueshima with 10 and sophomore Monika Dancevic with nine.

Senior Natalie Frazier’s streak stands at seven matches as she prepares to reach a milestone in her career. Frazier currently boasts 98 singles wins in her Georgia career, needing just two more to reach the 100-win milestone.

This contest will complete a five-match homestand before the Bulldogs take to the road for the first time at Clemson next week.

The University of Georgia will play host to the 2007 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, May 17-28. For ticket and tournament information, please visit the NCAA Tournament Information Center on georgiadogs.com.
