Lady Bulldogs Knock Off Davidson, 79-65
December 09, 2007 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. --- The seventh-ranked Georgia women’s basketball team placed six players in double figures in posting a hard-fought 79-65 victory over Davidson on Sunday at Stegeman Coliseum.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 9-0, while the Wildcats slipped to 5-3.
Sophomore forward Angel Robinson paced the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points. Sophomore guard Ashley Houts added 13, while sophomore guard Christy Marshall pitched in 12, and senior forwards Tasha Humphrey and Megan Darrah and freshman guard Angela Puleo each contributed 10.
Humphrey added 10 rebounds to give her a sixth straight double-double game. Robinson pulled down nine boards.
The first half of Sunday’s game was tight as the lead changed hands six times and there were two ties. But the Lady Bulldogs closed on a 15-2 run to take a 37-25 lead into the break. Davidson never got closer than eight in the second half, and that came in the first two minutes. For most of the second half, the Lady Bulldogs held a double-digit lead.
Georgia outrebounded Davidson 54-32 and converted 25 second-half points, compared to the Wildcats’ 10.
“We really dominated on the boards today,” Georgia coach Andy Landers said. “I think we get better and better rebounding the ball. ... We will know we are where we need to be when our players don’t miss any easy shots. We had a great game, but there were still a couple of times when someone would come down court and miss a lay-up. That is something that still needs work.”
Davidson got 14 points from sophomore forward Julia Paquette, 13 points apiece from senior guard Honna Housley and junior guard Kelly Gassie, and 12 points from senior guard Danielle Hurmeka.
“I am proud of the way our team responded and played against a great Georgia team,” Davidson coach Annette Watts said. “We played a lot of freshmen, sophomores and juniors today, and that’s tough against a team like Georgia. But I was really proud of them. I thought our team played very composed. We got down, but we never quit. The composure was there, and that’s very good.”
Georgia’s next game is Monday, Dec. 17, at home against Mercer.

No. 7/8 Georgia vs. Davidson
Sunday, December 9, 2007 Stegeman Coliseum Athens, Ga.
This is the second meeting between the two teams. Last year’s meeting of the Bulldogs and the Wildcats saw Georgia defeat the visiting Davidson team 74-68.
The Lady Dogs move to 9-0, which is the sixth-best start in the program’s history.
First-half scoring was tight as the lead changed hands six times and the game was tied twice. However, the Lady Bulldogs took a 37-25 lead going into halftime and would hold that lead for the remainder of the game.
With 10 rebounds today, Tasha Humphrey moves above Cynthia Collins to the No. 7 spot on the Lady Dogs’ all-time career rebound list.
Tasha Humphrey also posted a double-double, her sixth in as many games and the longest in her Lady Bulldog career. That also represents the longest such streak by a Georgia player since Katrina McClain had seven straight en route to garnering National Player of the Year honors in 1987.
Six Lady Bulldogs reached double digits for the second time this season...the other occasion coming against Georgia Southern.
Georgia Head Coach Andy Landers
“We really dominated on the boards today. I think we get better and better rebounding the ball. As positive as that was, we didn’t box out and that is something that we could do better on. The day is going to come when someone is going to want to get the ball as bad as us, and when that day comes we’re going to wish that we were boxer-outers.’”
“Tasha lit us up early. We had an early run and she knows how to get the ball inside and get points off of possessions. She can put the ball on the money. All our starters had a very good game. And (Christy) Marshall played well. She was a little soft today, but it still was her best game of the year. She is really improving.”

“I am proud of the way our team responded and played against a great Georgia team. We played a lot of freshmen, sohomores and juniors today, and that’s tough against a team like Georgia. But I was really proud of them. I thought our team played very composed. We got down, but we never quit. The composure was there, and that’s very good.”
“There are talented teams in the Southern Conference, but we won’t see teams as skilled as Georgia or teams like Georgia Tech, Virginia and Auburn. So I am glad we scheduled this game and I am glad we played this game. There are plenty of positives that we can take away from this game, and that will propel us into the rest of the season.”
“The rebounding difference (54-32) and the second-chance points that Georgia got (25) hurt us.”
