Athens Outtakes #12: Sea, Sun Replace Turkey, But Not Family

December 07, 2007 | Women's Basketball

Lady Bulldog freshman Angela Puleo is writing a weekly "Athens Outtakes" column for her hometown newspaper, The Daily Times in Maryville, Tenn., about the transition from high school to college and her experiences at the University of Georgia. Puleo became the 61st freshman to earn a starting spot with the Lady Bulldogs during Andy Landers tenure and the 21st to do so in their collegiate debut. Maryville also is the hometown of Landers, Georgia's Hall of Fame coach.

This is the twelfth installment in the series.

What a wonderful experience my trip to the Bahamas was last week with the University of Georgia women’s basketball team.

We arrived on Wednesday afternoon and the weather was perfect, as predicted. We quickly unpacked our suitcases and headed out to the beach. It was fun to lounge around with my teammates and work on my tan (for those of you who know how well I tan, you know this is an unattainable goal).

The next morning they loaded us all on a boat and we headed out to sea for some snorkeling. You have to realize that I am scared of my shadow, so jumping in the ocean was a huge step for me. It was wonderful! I saw some very colorful fish and zero sharks, so snorkeling was a huge success.

Thursday night we had a Thanksgiving dinner oceanside with the other teams that participated in the tournament. The music was as good as the food. Although it wasn’t my Grandma’s spaghetti or my Mamaw’s turkey, the seafood was delicious.

After a few relaxing days, it was time to focus on what brought us to the Bahamas in the first place. We defeated Prairie View A&M on Friday night and were set to play the University of Southern California in the championship game on Saturday. The USC game was a nail-biter that went back and forth, and at halftime we found ourselves down 34-28. We rallied together as a team and ended up winning the game 59-57.

My first trip to the Bahamas could not have been any better. I made some memories that will last a lifetime, and we have a championship trophy (a beautiful conch shell; pretty cool) to add to the trophy case.
