Six Freshmen Honored By CollegeFootballNews.com
December 06, 2007 | Football
In addition, the Bulldogs’ Clint Boling and Rennie Curran were named Second-Team picks on the CollegeFootballNews.com squad, while Chris Davis was named a Third-Team selection and Reshad Jones received an honorable mention.
Moreno, a redshirt freshman from Belford, N.J., has rushed for 1,273 yards for an average of 106.1 yards per game and 12 touchdowns. He is the 12th Bulldog in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards, including six 100-yard games. Moreno's 1,273 yards rank seventh all-time in a single season at Georgia and stands fourth all-time among SEC freshman in a season (1,616 by Herschel Walker-Georgia-1982; 1,364 by Jamal Lewis-Tennessee-1996; 1,341 by Emmitt Smith-Florida-1987). Moreno ranks No. 2 nationally for freshmen in rushing yards per game (106.0), trailing only Pittsburgh's LeSean McCoy (110.6).
Sturdivant, a native of Wadesboro, N.C., started all 12 regular-season games at left tackle for the Bulldogs. He became the first true freshman to start at that position in a season opener since Mike Fellows in 1989.
Boling, a true freshman from Alpharetta, started the final nine contests for Georgia. He also logged some time at tackle this season for a Bulldog offensive line that featured three freshmen starters for most of the year.
Davis, a redshirt freshman from Jefferson, started all 12 regular-season games at left guard for the Bulldogs.
Sturdivant, Boling and Davis have helped the Bulldogs roll up more than 379 total yards and 31 points per game this season. Sturdivant, Boling, Davis and their line mates have surrendered just 15 sacks this year while helping Georgia’s offense produce a 100-yard rusher in eight games. In addition, they helped the Georgia offense rush for 328 yards against Ole Miss, which were the most rushing yards in a game by the Bulldogs since 1991.
Curran, a true freshman from Snellville, has appeared in 10 games at linebacker, including four starts. Curran ranks fourth on the team with 46 tackles, 39 of which were solos. He rolled up 13 tackles in the win over Kentucky and was named SEC Freshman of the Week.
Jones, a redshirt freshman from Atlanta, has appeared in all 12 games at free safety, including two starts. Jones ranks third on the team with 51 tackles and also has three pass break-ups and two interceptions. He tied for a team-best seven tackles in the win over Florida.
Up next, the fourth-ranked Bulldogs (10-2) face 10th-ranked Hawaii (12-0) in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
