Defender becomes first Bulldog freshman ever recognized by SoccerAmerica.
OAKLAND, Calif. University of Georgia freshman defender Kelli Corless (Acworth, Ga.) was named a First-Team Freshman All-American by SoccerAmerica this week. Corless becomes the first Bulldog freshman ever honored the Oakland-based publication and was the only player from the Southeastern Conference recognized in 2007.
“The honors continue to recognize Kelli for a tremendous rookie campaign,” said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker. “We appreciate SoccerAmerica placing her on the First Team and justifiably so she was one of the best young defenders in the country this fall. Kelli, her classmates and teammates helped change the complexion of our program forever this year. The future is very bright for her and for Bulldog soccer overall.”
Corless is the only freshman from the Southeastern Conference to be honored by SoccerAmerica on either of the first or second all-freshman teams. Corless started all 24 games for Georgia at left back and was part of a defense that posted 10 shutouts on the year. Corless was also tabbed with crucial corner-kick and set-piece duties, and tallied a goal and five assists off of those opportunities.
“I am very honored and excited to receive this award,” said Corless. “Coming in as a freshman you don’t know what to expect or what kind of season the team will have, so all you can do is go out try to make a difference on and off the field. That is what strived for this year, I just hoped to help make the team successful.”
Corless has become one of the most decorated freshman in Georgia history. In addition to her First-Team All-America honor, she was named an NSCAA All-Region choice, voted the SEC Freshman of the Year and was a Second-Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman selection earlier this season.
Georgia has now had a freshman All-America selection for two straight years and in three of the last four: Corless, SoccerAmerica, 2007; Carrie Patterson, SoccerBuzz (2nd team), 2006; and Susie Weber, SoccerBuzz (3rd team), 2004. Georgia’s other Freshman All-Americans include: Charisse Co, SoccerBuzz (Honorable Mention), 2001; Carolyn Cayard, SoccerBuzz (1st team), 1999; and Kristy Bongiovanni, SoccerBuzz (3rd team), 1997.
“I am honored to be considered among so many former Georgia players,” said Corless. “This is a great achievement, but as we continue to say, any awards for individuals this year have really come from the success of our team. It is great for the program and for the team and we are already excited about next season.”
