Whitney Owens Signs With Georgia Softball
December 21, 2007 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. Whitney Owens, a pitcher/designated hitter, from Pendleton, Ind., has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend the University of Georgia and play softball for the Bulldogs, head coach Lu Harris-Champer announced on Friday.
Owens helped Pendleton Heights High School to a state runner-up finish in her freshman year when she compiled a 20-1 record with an earned run average of 0.20, a school record. Owens also holds the Pendleton Heights school record for strikeouts in a season at 191, and she tossed two no-hitters as a freshman en route to being named an All-State team member, the Indy Star Player of the Year and Herald Bulletin Player of the Year.
“Whitney’s ability to break the ball and command her location is outstanding,” Harris-Champer said. “She can tick-tac-toe the strike zone with her pitches. Whitney is also a clutch hitter.”
A member of the Illinois Southern Force travel team, Owens helped guide the squad to runner-up finishes at the Colorado Independence Day Tournament and at the ASA Nationals. She went 8-0 on the mound at Nationals while also hitting .440 with three homeruns. Owens ended the 2007 season with a record of 33-2. For her overall travel team career, Owens helped lead teams to two national championships, five runner-up national title finishes and sixteen state titles.
Owens has also received recognition for Academic Honors, was twice named Pendleton Heights High School Student of the Month and maintained a 3.85 grade point average over the course of her junior and senior years.
