Carrie Patterson Named NSCAA Second-Team All-American

KANSAS CITY, Kan. --- Sophomore forward Carrie Patterson (Atlanta, Ga.) of the University of Georgia soccer team was named a Second-Team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, announced the NSCAA this week. Patterson becomes just the second Bulldog ever to earn All-America honors, joining two-time honoree Stephanie Yarem (1997-98).

“We are excited about the news of Carrie becoming just our second soccer All-American at the University of Georgia,” said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker. “This level of recognition puts Carrie and our program in very elite company. She had another productive fall and was surrounded by a number of good players. Stephanie has been our lone All-American for awhile and I can’t think of two better people to share this honor.”

Starting all 24 games for the Bulldogs, Patterson led Georgia in goals scored (13), points (32), game-winning goals (5), shots (67), shots on goal (36) and was tied for the team-lead in assists (6).

“It is really a great feeling to be considered with this group of soccer players,” said Patterson. “To be recognized with them is a great honor. I am really happy about the attention this can bring to the Georgia soccer program and what we are trying to do here. For me it is a great confidence booster and I think it will motivate me to work even harder in the spring and get ready for next season. I am really happy with the season we had this year and attribute all of my success to my teammates. We are headed in the right direction and I think there is so much potential with this team and the recruits coming in, we can only continue to get better.”

Already one of the most decorated Bulldogs in recent memory, Patterson can now add an All-American honor to her continually growing list of accolades. Also announced this week were the NSCAA All-Southeast Region honorees, among which Patterson was named a First-Team selection. Earlier this season she was tabbed with her second consecutive first-team All-SEC honor, following up a 2006 season that saw her become Georgia’s first-ever SEC Freshman of the Year. Patterson was also named a SoccerBuzz Freshman All-American last year.

“Carrie is becoming one of the most talented front runners in the country,” said Baker. “She was able to run onto a number of balls last year and score goals, but this year she started to become more of a complete forward. Her ability to do more by herself and score so many different types of goals showed some of her development. Playing alongside freshman Marah Falle all year up top helped as well and they created a great partnership for such a young duo.”

Coming off of her record-breaking 2006 campaign, Patterson was admittedly worried about a Sophomore Slump’. She took no time at all to dispel that notion, scoring in the first game of the year against Texas Tech. With that tally, she became the first Bulldog ever to score on opening night in both of her first two years in a UGA uniform.

Patterson has already become one of the most potent offensive threats ever to take the field in a Bulldog uniform. After just two years, her career totals are well on pace to challenge several of Georgia’s offensive career records. With two goals against Alabama A&M in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, Patterson drove her career point total up to 63, good for third place all-time at Georgia and just three points shy of second career points-scored list. The current career points leader is Mandy Aiken, who logged 78 points from 1995-98.

With 25 career goals, Patterson is currently alone in fourth place all-time on the career goals-scored list at UGA. Aiken is also the career leader in goals scored, totaling 33 tallies. Patterson is just one goal short of third on that list, behind Amy Berbary’s 26.

Patterson is also chasing the career assists mark, registering 13 helpers thus far, including six this year to go with her seven in 2006. Suzannah Weathersbee is the all-time assists leader with 23. Patterson needs just two assists to break into the Top-5 in that category as well.

Additionally, Patterson’s eight career game-winners ties her for third all-time at Georgia, while her four game-winners this season ties her for the third-highest single-season mark. Yarem holds the career record with 15 winning tallies and is also the single-season leader, scoring eight game-winners in 1997.
