Getting To Know Georgia Cross Country Runner Emily Houston

ATHENS, Ga. --- With the NCAA South Regional Championships only days away, Bulldog fans as well as distance running enthusiasts can get to know members of UGA’s cross country teams with “Q&A” features on georgiadogs.com. The ninth installment in this series is with freshman Emily Houston.
Houston, a native of Jensen Beach, Fla., has raced in four meets for the No. 29 Lady Bulldogs this season, including clocking a season-best 6k time of 21:44 (74th) at the Bill Dellinger Invitational. At her first Southeastern Conference Championships, Houston, who was the 2006 FHSAA 2-A cross country champion, was the fourth finisher for the Georgia women after finishing 32nd with a time of 21:50.25.
Q: What are your favorite things about Athens?
A: I love the downtown and the amazing campus. We have so many great restaurants and shops that are undiscovered.
Q: If you were not a collegiate runner, you would be competing in what sport and why?
A: I would probably still be playing soccer.
Q: What do you believe your top accomplishment so far in life is?
A: Receiving a scholarship and being able to run at a large Division-I school as well as winning a state title my senior year are both huge accomplishments.
Q: What is your favorite Southern food?
A: Um . . . cornbread.
Q: How many brothers/sisters do you have?
A: Two brothers.
Q: What is your favorite musical group or solo artist?
A: I love all kinds of music! Anything that can change my mood or make me feel a certain way.
Q: What are your career aspirations?
A: Right now, I'm just starting to discover what I'm interested in. I would love to be involved in some kind of journalism or something that involves writing as well as people.
Q: What were your reasons for becoming a Bulldog?
A: The wonderful ladies on my cross-country team, my coach (Dave Hartman), the campus and a great education.
Q: What is your major?
A: Journalism and Communications.
Georgia cross country returns to action at the NCAA South Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla., on Nov. 10. The Georgia women are the defending champions of this meet.
