Georgia leads Auburn In Match Play Quarterfinals

November 05, 2007 | Women's Golf

ORLANDO, Fla. --- The Georgia women’s golf team built a solid 2-0 lead over Auburn in the quarterfinals of the Hooter’s Collegiate Match Play Championship on Sunday before the match was suspended due to darkness.

Carolina Andrade defeated Candace Schepperle, 4-and-3, and Krystle Caithness topped Margaret Shirley, 5-and-3, before the match was stopped. Auburn would have to win all three remaining individual matches to win team competition. Of those, Georgia’s Garrett Phillips is 1-up and Bulldogs Mallory Hetzel and Alina Lee are both all square. There are three holes remaining in each of those matches.

“We have a pretty good rivalry with Auburn,” head coach Kelley Hester said. “It’s probably about 50-50 between us over the past 10 years or so. Our kids were up for the match. It’s exciting to get those two wins in the books, and we’ll try to finish it off tomorrow.”

The winner of the Georgia-Auburn match will move on to face the winner of Florida-South Carolina in the semifinals. The four quarterfinal matches will continue at 7:30 a.m., with the semis slated to start at approximately 9:30.

Earlier on Sunday, the Bulldogs defeated New Mexico, 2-2-1, on a tiebreaker.

Phillips and Andrade captured the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, with a pair of 3-and-2 wins. At the No. 3 spot. Innapha Tantanavivat earned the all-important half point in dramatic fashion. Tantanavivat was 2-down to Alexandra Phelps with just three holes to play but rallied to win the 16th and 18th holes to knot the match. Georgia won the tiebreakder because the Bulldogs’ two victories were more decisive than New Mexico’s two wins.

“Mallory was sick in the morning so we subbed in Innapha,” Hester said. “We were quite fortunate to get out of the match. We won those two matches so decisively it felt like we were playing better, but in team match play it’s only a point for each match. We couldn’t get a win in one of those other matches, and Innapha being able to halve her match was all that got us into the tiebreaker and the win.”

All four remaining teams in the Bulldogs’ half of the draw are from the Southeastern Conference.

“We have seven SEC teams in the fields and our entire half of the bracket is SEC teams,” Hester said. “I think if you asked anyone they would tell you there’s no doubt that the SEC is the strongest women’s golf conference in the country. This tournament is just proof of that.”
