Georgia Volleyball Drops 3-0 Contest To LSU

November 17, 2007 | Volleyball

BATON ROUGE, La. ---
The Georgia volleyball team (17-12, 8-11 Southeastern Conference) dropped a 3-0 contest to the LSU Tigers (23-6, 14-5 SEC) Friday night at the Maravich Center.

LSU picked up the win over Georgia with game scores of 30-23, 30-17 and 30-24. With the win, the Tigers clinched at least a share of the SEC Western Division title for a third consecutive year. One game ahead of Ole Miss (24-7, 13-6 SEC) in the SEC West standings, LSU will play for outright division title on Sunday against Auburn, while Georgia will face Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss.

“Tonight in Baton Rouge we just ran into a very free and balanced LSU team who is set for the (NCAA) Tournament,” Georgia head coach Joel McCartney said. “They’ve been a lock for a couple of weeks now, and they were able to play pretty smooth transition volleyball tonight. We did not have our best game, but I give every bit of credit to an LSU team who has built up some confidence.”

The Tigers posted a hitting percentage of .252 for the match, while limiting the Bulldogs to a mark of .060. LSU also held a decisive edge in blocks with 14.5 compared to Georgia’s 4.0.

Junior outside hitters Kyna Washington and Marina Skender led LSU with 12 kills apiece, and Washington also added 18 digs for a double-double. The Tigers also received a match-high 25 digs from junior libero Elena Martinez.

Freshman outside hitter Erika Clark and junior setter Mara Martin were Georgia’s top performers in the match. Clark posted a team-best nine kills on a .304 hitting percentage, while Martin recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 22 assists and 10 digs.

In game one, Georgia was within one at 12-11, but a 6-0 LSU run put the Tigers up 18-11 and they would go on to take the game 30-23.

LSU built a six point edge at 10-4 in the second game, but Georgia went on a 9-2 run to go up 13-12. However, the Tigers answered by going on an 18-4 run to take the game 30-17 and go up 2-0 in the match.

The Tigers then took a 3-0 lead to start the third game. Georgia kept the game close and was within two a 23-21, but LSU would not relinquish its advantage en route to taking the game and match 30-24.

Georgia will conclude its 2007 regular season schedule with Sunday’s match at Ole Miss. First serve for the match is slated for 2:30 p.m. EDT. Live stats of the contest will be available at www.olemisssports.com.
