Getting To Know Georgia Cross Country Runner Julia Whitrock

Whitrock, a native of Baton Rouge, La., is redshirting for the Georgia women this season. While at University High Laboratory School, Whitrock broke the LHSAA 2A state meet record in the 3200-meter run as a senior. She has personal-best times of 11:37.13 in the 3200 and 18:21 in the three-mile run.
Question: What are your favorite things about Athens?
Answer: The downtown, all the local restaurants and stores downtown. I can't believe how pretty it is!
Q: If I were not a collegiate runner, I would be competing in what sport and why?
A: I dont think I would be competing in another sport. There isn't any other collegiate sport that I enjoy doing as much as running.
Q: What do you believe your top accomplishment so far in life is?
A: Moving to Athens. I am from Baton Rouge and have never really been away from home or my family for an extended period of time. I think moving so far away and being completely happy.
Q: What is your favorite Southern food?
A: I don't have just one! Gumbo, crawfish or any other type of seafood, pickled okra, caf au lait.
Q: How many brothers/sisters do you have?
A: One brother in seventh grade.
Q: Do you have any collegiate/professional athletes (former or current) in your family?
A: My dad tried out for the Wisconsin track team as a triple jumper, but only lasted three weeks.
Q: What is your favorite musical group or solo artist?
A: Dave Matthews Band and Sublime are my two favorites.
Q: What are your career aspirations?
A: I thought I wanted to go into physical therapy, but being here I've found A LOT of stuff I'm interested in so I'm not sure anymore. Whatever I do, I really want to enjoy it.
Q: What were your reasons for becoming a Bulldog?
A: I loved the school, the town of Athens, Coach (Dave) Hartman and the team.
Q: What is your major?
A: Sports and Exercise Science.
The Georgia women will compete at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 19.
