Georgia Softball Assists Special Olympics 5K

November 13, 2007 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. --- This past weekend, the Georgia softball team assisted the Special Olympics in hosting the 17th running of the 5K Special Olympics Annual Run (SOAR).

SOAR was sponsored by several local businesses with all proceeds going to the Clarke County Chapter of Special Olympics.

"The Gym Dogs usually do it, and this year we thought it was a good idea to take part in it too because it's for a good cause," senior Melissa Wood said. "The whole softball team took part in the event, so it was pretty cool."

On Friday evening, Georgia student-athletes including members from the softball team teamed up with the Special Olympics committee for a sleepover with the Special Olympics athletes. The sleepover, held at an Athens area elementary school, featured games and a movie prior to getting a good night's sleep before the 5K race the next morning.

On Saturday morning, the entire Georgia Softball team arrived to help by holding signs directing which way the race was to go. The race, which started and ended at Hilsman Middle School, was open to runners, joggers, walkers and wheelchair participants of all ages.
