Getting To Know Georgia Cross Country Runner Dustin Tetley

November 01, 2007 | Cross Country

With the Southeastern Conference Championships completed and the NCAA South Regionals around the corner, Bulldog fans as well as distance running enthusiasts can get to know members of UGA's cross country teams with "Q&A" features on georgiadogs.com. The eighth installment in this series is with junior Dustin Tetley.

Tetley, who graduated from Milton High School after growing up in Alpharetta, has competed in five races during the 2007 season. After running unattached at the NCAA Pre-Nationals and finishing 85th (26:11), Tetley clocked a 26:18.27 for 66th place at the SEC Championships in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 27.

QUESTION: What are your favorite things about Athens?
ANSWER: Athens is just the best college town! It has just the right mix of everything: great downtown setting, beautiful campus and huge music scene.

Q: Do you have any collegiate/professional athletes (former or current) in your family?
A: Tetley is a big name in sports up north. Curling is a great sport up there, and my uncle, Ian Tetley, is a three-time world champion curler for Team Canada. My grandfather, Bill Tetley, also won the Canadian Championships. My aunt Erika played golf for the University of Wisconsin and has been to the Olympics three times curling for Team USA!

Q: If you were not a collegiate runner, you would be competing in what sport and why?
A: If I weren't running, I'd likely be playing baseball. I was a baseball player for a long time! I started when I was about 5 and was a big Blue Jays fan. I played until I was almost 16, then it was just too hard to continue with both track and baseball at the same time.

Q: What do you believe your top accomplishment so far in life is?
A: Well, my top accomplishment is a tough one, but I am very proud of the progress Ive made in track and cross country throughout my career. Its been very hard work day-in and day-out to compete against some of the best athletes in the country!

Q: What is your favorite Southern food?
A: Stir-fry. Love all sorts of them, especially with Cajun food.

Q: How many brothers/sisters do you have?
A: I have two sisters and I'm right in the middle. My older sister is 24 and she graduated from Kennesaw State University. My younger sister is 17, a senior in high school and might end up a Georgia Bulldog!

Q: What is your favorite musical group or solo artist?
A: I'm a big fan of alternative rock. Coldplay, U2, Ben Folds . . . I could listen to them all day.

Q: What are your career aspirations?
A: Right now I really could go in many different directions, though I do know I would like to be working in the business world, as vague as that sounds. I'm still experimenting and working to open as many doorways as I can.

Q: What were your reasons for becoming a Bulldog?
A: UGA is just a perfect fit for me. It was the only school I applied to because I knew it was where I wanted to be. I love being a part of a big SEC school, not being too far from home (Alpharetta) and being able to continue my cross country career!

Q: What is your major?
A: International Business, also a minor in French.
