Georgia Golfers Finish Sixth At Stanford Intercollegiate
October 21, 2007 | Women's Golf
PALO ALTO, Calif. --- The Georgia women’s golf team finished sixth at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Sunday, climbing two spots on the team leaderboard after firing a 293 in the final round.
The No. 9-ranked Bulldogs fought back from a near disastrous start. After playing the first six holes at a combined 12-over as a team, Georgia rallied to play the rest of the way at 3-under.
“We played a little guttier today,” head coach Kelley Hester said. “Thing weren’t going well early on, but they figured out a way to get it in the hole, which is definitely what we needed today. I think they knew it wasn’t going well at the start of the day and said Whoa. We don’t want a repeat of yesterday.’ I’m proud of them.“
A day earlier, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start that snowballed into a season-worst 307 and just their second round in the 300s this fall.
The Bulldogs counted an even-par 71 from Garrett Phillips, a 72 from Carolina Andrade, a 73 from Mallory Hetzel and a 77 from Alina Lee. Krystle Caithness carded an 81.
Overall, Phillips tied for eighth at 4-over 217, her first top-10 of the fall and fourth in a season and a half at Georgia. In addition, Andrade posted a career-best effort by tying for 16th at 220, Caithness tied for 38th at 230, Hetzel tied for 47th at 233 and Lee was 79th at 243.
No. 4 Arizona State utilized an spectacular final round to make up a 12-shot deficit entering the day and surge past top-ranked Duke to the team title. The Sun Devils shot 8-under on Sunday to finish at 862, four shots ahead of the Blue Devils. Rounding out the top 10 teams were No. 2 UCLA at 872, No. 22 Arkansas at 886, No. 15 Cal at 890, the Bulldogs at 896, No. 7 Arizona at 897, No. 14 Pepperdine at 898, No. 21 Stanford at 917 and No. 21 Vanderbilt at 920.
Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis earned medalist honors after finishing at 2-under 211, a single shot better than Arizona State’s Jennifer Osborn.
The Bulldogs will conclude their fall slate in two weeks when they travel to Ginn Reunion Resort near Orlando to compete in the Hooters/NGCA Collegiate Match Play Championship from Nov. 4-6.
