ATHENS, Ga. --- Five of the top eight seeds won a pair of matches to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Southern Regional Women’s Tennis Championships Saturday at the Dan Magill Complex.

Kristi Miller (Georgia Tech), Diana Srebrovic (Florida), Amanda McDowell (Georgia Tech) and Laura Vallverdu (Miami) are the four seeds who advanced plus number seven seed Maya Johansson (Georgia Tech). The three seeds who fell short were fifth seed Megan Alexander (Florida), number six seed Monika Dancevic (Georgia) and number eight seed Whitney McCray (Georgia Tech).

Four of Georgia’s six entries made it to the round of 16 including sophomore Naoko Ueshima with a pair of straight set victories. In the round of 32, she posted a 6-1,6-1 victory over Renee Joseph (Miss. State). In the first round, Joseph recorded the big upset of the day when she outlasted fifth seed Megan Alexander (Florida) 6-3,3-6,7-6(5). Georgia freshman Cameron Ellis knocked off Auburn’s Alex Haney 6-3,7-6(4) to earn a shot at top seed Kristi Miller. Ellis is now 9-2 in her career.

In the second round, Miller was pushed to a third set before beating Romy Farah (Miami) 6-3,3-6,6-0. Up next, Ueshima will face a Yellow Jacket too, as she will battle Kirsten Flower. Ueshima is 8-4 on the year. Georgia’s Yvette Hyndman and Kelley Hyndman picked up two wins apiece Saturday.

“We had a strong day in singles with four getting to the round of 16,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “I was disappointed that Monika as a seed didn’t make it through today but all in all, we played well. I’m looking forward to starting Sunday off with some good doubles.”

Action resumes Sunday at 8 a.m. with two rounds of doubles followed by one round of singles.
