Getting To Know Georgia Cross Country Runner Nicole DeMarco

October 16, 2007 | Cross Country

ATHENS, Ga. --- As the postseason approaches for Georgia’s cross country teams, Bulldog fans as well as distance running enthusiasts can get to know members of UGA’s cross country teams with “Q&A” features on georgiadogs.com. The third installment in this series is with senior Nicole DeMarco.

DeMarco, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., was the third Lady Bulldog across the finish line at the 6K NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 13. She clocked a 21:18.3 and helped earn the Georgia women 11th place at the national meet.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Athens?
A: All the coffee shops, perfect for studying in a social setting so it doesn’t feel quite like studying.

Q: What do you believe your top accomplishment so far in life is?
A: The most influential decision I’ve made in regards to my studies has been applying for the Security Leadership Program at the Center for International Trade and Security (CITS). Through CITS, I have gotten involved with Student Ambassadors, created a student organization on campus and I am involved in a NSF grant. I have also worked in the Washington, D.C. office, I am writing a policy proposal for the Roosevelt Institute and have gotten involved with the Carl Vinson Institute for Democratic Governance.

Q: What is four favorite Southern food?
A: Not to sound clich, but I am a huge fan of fried okra.

Q: How many brothers/sisters do you have?
A: I have two: an older brother (UGA alum!) and a younger sister.

Q: What is your favorite musical group or solo artist?
A: I am not really that into music, although I am always up for some Pat Benatar.

Q: What are your career aspirations?
A: After completing a fellowship in Washington, D.C. this summer, I absolutely will be heading back in time for the 2008 election. In addition, I have applied for a job at the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in Vienna, Austria, as well as for a number of fellowships in D.C. (in Congress, NGO’s and different departments) that relate to issues of WMD nonproliferation and international security.

Q: What is your major?
A: International Affairs, with a fellowship at the Center for International Trade and Security.

Q: What were your reasons for becoming a Bulldog?
A: Unlike other schools I visited, Athens has the best combination of a culmination of attributes. The athletic program is obviously successful, but I was also attracted to the academic opportunities and the unique city life. The downtown has character, the school has credentials and the athletic program have Uga. I think the real question is, why not?

Georgia cross country returns to action at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 27. The Lady Bulldogs battled for second place at the 2006 league meet before capturing their first NCAA South Region title.
