Top-Ranked Gym Dogs Travel to Face UK
Georgia begins the start of a three-meet road stretch, coming off a record performance in the season opener at home last week against Stanford. The Gym Dogs scored a 197.375 in the victory – a school record for the first meet of a season. A year ago, Georgia didn’t post a score that high until meet No. 7, and in 2005 it wasn’t until the NCAA Super Six Finals that the team bettered that total.
Junior Katie Heenan sparked Georgia against the Cardinal, winning the all-around in the season’s first meet for the second straight year. Her score of 39.55 included a pair of 9.925s on vault and floor and was the best all-around total since her freshman season.
Sophomore Courtney Kupets opened the year with a career-best 9.975 on the balance beam. Georgia’s 49.5 on the uneven bars was the team’s highest total since a 49.575 at home against Iowa State on March 5, 2004.
Three freshmen, Courtney McCool, Marcia Newby and Grace Taylor, all made their Gym Dog debuts. McCool scored a 9.9 on beam and a 9.775 on floor. Newby had a 9.875 on vault and a 9.8 on bars, while Taylor scored a 9.9 on bars, a 9.8 on beam and also competed on floor.
Friday night’s meet will be the season-opener for Kentucky. The Wildcats return every key member from last year’s team including a group of three seniors.
The last time Georgia competed in Lexington, the Gym Dogs earned a 195.85-193.325 victory on Jan. 21, 2005. In that meet, Heenan was the high all-arounder with a 39.2 that included a 9.9 on beam. It was the only 9.9 of the night for either side.
Conference Domination
For the third time in program history, Georgia is looking to win its fourth straight Southeastern Conference championship in 2007. The Gym Dogs won four straight SEC titles from 1991-94 and 1996-99.
This season the conference championship will be decided in Little Rock, Ark., for the first time.
Georgia completed its SEC schedule in 2006 with a 6-0 record. It marked the seventh time in the last 10 years the Gym Dogs were undefeated in conference regular-season action. Georgia has won 14 of its last 15 road meets against SEC competition.
The Gym Dogs won the 1991 and 1996 SEC Championships in Kentucky’s Memorial Coliseum, as well as the 1989 NCAA Southeast Regional. At the 1991 SECs, Alabama was in the lead and on a bye during the final rotation and Georgia needed a solid score on the floor exercise for the win. The Gym Dogs only warmed up five athletes on the event, but after a fall in the lineup, Coach Yoculan pulled Lisa Alicea off the bench to compete in the
sixth and final spot. Alicea scored a 9.45 and Georgia earned the victory.
2006 Road Trip Totals
Last season, Georgia’s average scores for bars and beam were higher on the road than at home. In regular-season meets, Georgia had its best team event totals for vault (49.5 at AU and Utah), bars (49.475 at AU) and beam (49.425 at Mich.) away from Stegeman Coliseum.
