Bulldogs To Face Winthrop, Florida State This Weekend
January 31, 2007 | Women's Tennis
The Bulldogs had an impressive opening weekend of competition last weekend that saw them beat No. 28 Texas A&M, 6-1, and upset 6th-ranked Baylor in a 7-0 rout. They catapulted in the rankings from 24th to 16th after those performances.
“We’re very excited about how the season started off for us,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “But we realize we have a lot of season ahead of us. We are on a mission to go into every match treating every opponent the same and continue improving every aspect of our game.”
Georgia will be Winthrop’s second opponent in as many days, as the Eagles also compete at Furman on Thursday afternoon. The team is 0-3 heading into those contests, including a 6-1 loss to No. 7 North Carolina and a 6-0 loss to Southeastern Conference member Ole Miss.
Georgia leads the all-time series 2-0, winning both meetings in 2002 and 2006.
“This match will be another great opportunity for us to get right back on the court and work on all of those things we need to do to be successful,” Wallace said. “It’s key for us to be competitive and fired up and show intensity.”
The Bulldogs are also set to face Florida State on Saturday. The Seminoles are 1-0 on the year with a 6-1 win over Jacksonville State.
Florida State is ahead in the all-time series, 10-6. The last meeting between the teams was in 1996, which resulted in a 6-1 Georgia victory. The Bulldogs have won the last three meetings.
“Florida State is one of the three ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) schools we have on our schedule this year, so we definitely want to put in a good showing,” Wallace said. “It’s always big when it’s ACC versus SEC. It will be a great match to close out the weekend.”
Wins in this weekend’s contest would put the Bulldogs at a 4-0 start to a season for the eighth time in the last 10 years.
