Georgia's Frazier Named SEC Player Of The Week
January 30, 2007 | Women's Tennis
This award comes after Frazier led Georgia to an impressive opening weekend of competition that included a 6-1 win over No. 28 Texas A&M and an upset sweep over No. 6 Baylor. It is the third SEC Player of the Week award for Frazier, who also won it Feb. 22, 2005 her sophomore year and March 7, 2006 her junior year.
The senior out of Riverdale, Ga., went 2-0 in singles and doubles last weekend, including two victories over top-50 opponents.
On Friday, Frazier clinched the match over Texas A&M with a straight-sets win over No. 48 Anna Lubinsky at No. 1 singles after teaming with partner Naoko Ueshima for an 8-6 doubles win.
She put in another stellar performance Sunday to drop Baylor’s Zuzana Zemenova, the No. 21-ranked player in the country and the 2005 NCAA Singles Champion, in straight sets. She fought from behind in the first set to force a tiebreaker and then go on to win it, 7-6(5), before claiming the second set, 6-4. Her 8-3 doubles win with Ueshima earlier was the clincher for the match’s first point as well.
Frazier has now beaten 30 ranked opponents in her career and has won 10 of her last 12 matches.
Georgia welcomes two more non-conference foes to Athens this weekend in Winthrop (Friday 2:30 p.m.) and Florida State (Saturday 1 p.m.).
