Catherine Bruce Named To TDS National Team Of The Week

September 18, 2006 | Soccer

GREENWOOD, Ind. --- Senior captain Catherine Bruce (Decatur, Ga.) of the University of Georgia women’s soccer team (5-2) was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, announced TDS on Monday. Bruce becomes the second Bulldog defender to receive the award this year.

“I am very happy for Catherine to be recognized in this way,” said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker. “Being a senior captain and coming back recently from an injury, I know she has been anxious to get back out there. She was a big reason why we kept two clean sheets this past weekend. As a team, we haven’t been playing some of our best soccer but defensively we are doing good job across the board. This kind of national award reflects not only on Catherine but on our entire back line and our goalkeeping, and it nice that they have been recognized after a couple of solid performances this weekend.”

“I am very flattered and honored to receive national acclaim like this,” said Bruce. “It is a privilege to be able to bring positive recognition to our program. It is nice to know that people have taken notice of what we are trying to do defensively and it shows that we have had some success. I think across the country people realize that this team is going in the right direction.”

From her center back position, Bruce anchors a defense that has recorded three straight shutouts and five on the year. The squad has allowed just four goals through seven games, all of which came against Top-20 nationally-ranked opponents. In two wins over the weekend, Georgia allowed its opponents just 11 total shots, only four of which were put on goal.

Bruce also chipped in to the two-win effort on the offensive side of the ball, notching two game-winning assists on the weekend. In UGA’s 3-0 win over Furman Friday night, Bruce assisted on the game-winner by junior Ashley Stinson (Acworth, Ga.). Then in Georgia’s 2-0 victory over Georgia State on Sunday, Bruce lofted a ball across the box that was buried home by senior Randi-Lynn Bruso (Douglas, Mass.) just 00:58 into the game, for what would be the eventual game-winner.

Bruce becomes the second Bulldog to earn this honor in 2006 as she joins sophomore teammate Kristin Garman, who was named to the TDS Team of the Week on August 28.

Bruce and her Bulldog teammates begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 22 as they head to Starkville, Miss. for a 7 p.m. matchup with Mississippi State (1-6). The Dogs then travel over to Oxford, Miss. for a Sunday tilt against Ole Miss. GXtra, Georgia’s premium subscription website, will carry a live audio broadcast of both games.

“We are really excited to start conference play,” said Bruce. “I think there are great possibilities for what we can do with the rest of our season. SEC play is a season in itself and it is nice to gain some positive momentum headed into this part of our schedule. I am really excited to see our team excel.”
