Lady Bulldogs Win Head-To-Head Battle With Western Carolina

September 16, 2006 | Cross Country

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Georgia women’s cross country team continued its early success by beating Western Carolina in a dual meet at the Catamounts’ course on Saturday morning.  For the men, the Bulldogs were edged by Western Carolina on the 2K trail.

Junior Rebekah Madebach led the way for the Georgia women, who bested Western Carolina 19-44, by finishing second overall (9:09).  Also in Georgia’s top five finishers were Jill Steffens (fourth 9:29), Kristin Heffelfinger (fifth 9:30), Jillian Lammers (sixth 9:31) and Sarah Madebach (seventh 9:31).

“I’m really happy with the effort from the women today,” Hartman said.  “We wanted to work on running as a pack and with a team strategy today and the girls did that.  I thought Rebekah Madebach ran an extremely strong race and since she won this meet two years ago as a freshman, we wanted her to get a shot at defending that today.”

After an evening meet on Friday night, the Bulldogs (16 points) fell to the Western Carolina men (47) with Sam Gillespie crossing the finish line first for the Bulldogs (fifth 8:30).  In addition, Matthew Roberson took ninth (8:32), Kurt Kimmons finished 10th (8:33), Charlie Dickhaus battled for an 11th-place finish (8:34) and Ryley Miller took 14th (8:35).

“With the men, we also wanted to work on running as a group today and I think they did a great job,” said Hartman.  “I think they were a little leg tired today from traveling and racing yesterday.  But this was a great two days of competition at Western Carolina.”

The Georgia women will be back in action first as they travel to South Bend, Ind., on Friday, Sept. 22, for the Notre Dame Invitational against some of the nation’s top teams.  The Bulldogs stay closer to home next week with a meet hosted by Auburn arriving on Saturday, Sept. 23.
