No. 18 Georgia Soccer Hosts Mercer Sunday

August 26, 2006 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. The 18th-ranked University of Georgia soccer team (1-0) will host Mercer (0-1) Sunday in its second contest of the season. Georgia looks to make it a perfect season-opening weekend after its 1-0 defeat of Jacksonville Friday night. Sunday’s kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. Admission to all Georgia soccer matches is free.

Mercer is coming off of a 2-1 overtime loss to Georgia Southern Friday night. The Bears and Bulldogs have squared off four times before, with Georgia winning all four contests. The last time the two teams faced each other was the 1999 season when the Bulldogs posted a 5-0 win.

Georgia and Mercer hit the pitch together in the spring exhibition season, a game that saw Georgia take a 2-0 win in Athens.

The Bulldogs conclude their season-opening homestand next Friday, Sept. 1, as they host No. 23 BYU at 7 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. The game will also include a special dedication ceremony in honor of the Hoyt “Jack” Turner family, for whom the complex has been named.
