August 25, 2006: Football Practice Notes

August 25, 2006 | Football

ATHENS, Ga. A day after its final full scrimmage of the fall, the Georgia football team went through a 90-minute practice session in helmets and shoulder pads on Friday at the Woodruff Practice Fields.

Thursday's scrimmage featured Georgia's top units against the scout team simulating Western Kentucky. On Friday, Richt said he was happy with how the session at Sanford Stadium went.

"I was pleased with the scrimmage," he said. "Both sides of the ball did a good job. And you have to give the scouts a lot of credit."

Friday's practice was also pleasing to Richt.

"Today was good," Richt said. "It was a little bit shorter, but it was crisp. Guys were hustling and I saw plays being made on both sides of the ball. I was happy with the attitude and the effort. They did a nice job."

As the preseason winds down, the Bulldogs are anxious to face competition other than their own teammates.

"Someone was saying that camp went by in the blink of an eye, but that in the last couple of weeks time has stood still," Richt said. "The two-week period before the first game can be monotonous. The guys are doing a good job handling that."

Richt said that he and the coaches are still determining the rotation of players for the first game. He said just because a player doesn't see the field in the first few weeks, it doesn't necessarily constitute a redshirt campaign. Richt noted that after the fourth or fifth game is when those final decisions are usually made.

"It will be interesting to see how many guys play," Richt said. "I see a lot of guys who deserve playing time."

Georgia opens the season Sept. 2 at home against WKU. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., and the game will be televised live by Lincoln Financial Sports. All Georgia games are broadcast live on the Bulldog Radio Network on AM 750 WSB in Atlanta and both 106.1 FM and 960 The Ref in Athens. Also, they can be heard on georgiadogs.com, the official website of UGA Athletics.
