Georgia Soccer To Host Clemson Saturday In Exhibition

August 18, 2006 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 18 University of Georgia soccer team will take on Clemson in a preseason exhibition match Saturday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. The game will mark the first time the 2006 Bulldogs will hit the pitch as a team facing outside competition.

"Our team is very excited for this opportunity to play," said head coach Patrick Baker. "Clemson is a very good team that is well coached and they are going to give us a lot to handle. We have just one preseason scrimmage and I cannot think of a better opponent for us to play to find out exactly where we are. They will test us technically and tactically and they will also test our fitness level. This is what preseason is all about. We probably aren't exactly where we want to be with injuries or in certain areas of our game but this will be good competition that will help us prepare for Jacksonville next Friday."

Clemson will be playing in its second exhibition match of the season. On Tuesday, the Tigers defeated Davidson by a score of 4-0 at home. Clemson returns 14 letterwinners and nine starters from the 2005 squad that received a bit to play in the NCAA Tournament. That team finished the year at 9-9-2 with a 4-5-1 record in the ACC.

Georgia's first regular season game will be played in Athens on Friday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. against Jacksonville. The Bulldogs are then back in action at home on Sunday, Aug. 27, for a 5 p.m. kickoff against Mercer.
