Georgia Women's Tennis Team Earns NCAA Bid

ATHENS, Ga. --- The 25th-ranked Georgia women's tennis team earned their 20th straight bid to the NCAA Championships Wednesday as the field of 64 was released by the NCAA.
The Bulldogs (12-9) will face 42nd-ranked Indiana (17-8) May 12th in Nashville, Tenn., while the host and 12th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores (21-4) battle East Tennessee State (23-4). Should Georgia advance, it would face the winner of Vanderbilt-ETSU in the second round on May 13th. The Commodores posted a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs during the regular season in Nashville.
Georgia and Indiana had two common opponent this season in Tennessee and Northwestern. The Bulldogs went 1-1 versus the Lady Vols, facing them in their last two matches this season while Indiana beat Tennessee 5-2 on Feb. 25 in Bloomington. Northwestern posted wins over both the Bulldogs and Hoosiers.
Georgia is 7-1 all-time against Indiana including 3-0 in NCAA Championship meetings. The teams last met in 1995 at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors when Georgia posted a 6-0 victory. Georgia and Indiana have met three times in the first round of the NCAAs. In 1988 in Los Angeles, Georgia beat Indiana 6-0, in 1991 in Palo Alto, Calif., Georgia won 6-0, and the Bulldogs advanced with a 5-3 win in Gainesville, Fla., in 1993.
The Bulldogs, under the direction of Jeff Wallace, earned an at-large bid to the 2006 NCAAs. Wallace is in his 21st season at Georgia with a career record of 453-116 (.796). The Bulldogs own a 47-17 mark in the NCAAs, and they have won two national championships in the Wallace era (1994 in Athens and 2000 in Malibu, Calif.). Last year, Georgia reached the NCAA quarterfinals.
