ATHENS, Ga. --- The Tennessee Lady Vols (53-9) captured the program's first SEC Tournament Championship on Saturday with a 3-0 win over the LSU Tigers (51-12) at the UGA Softball Complex.
Monica Abbott improved her record to 37-7 after hurling a five-hit shutout, striking out six. The junior left-hander was presented with Tournament MVP honors following the game.
Tennessee plated all three of its runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Vols loaded the bases after stringing together two singles and a hit-by-a-pitch. Katherine Card plated Kenora Posey and Lindsay Schutzler with a two-RBI single to left field. Tennessee scored its last run of the frame courtesy of Natalie Brock's RBI single.
"Last night we decided to make some changes offensively," said Tennessee co-head coach Ralph Weekly. "We had (Katherine) Card showing bunt so she could see the ball longer and it worked. We also had people moving around in the box and we made some two-strike adjustments."
Emily Turner (25-7) took the loss for the Tigers after allowing three earned runs and nine hits in 7.0 innings.
The SEC All-Tournament team was announced at the conclusion of Saturday's championship game. For a complete list of honorees, please see list below.
