ATHENS, Ga. - Chris Kirk, Brian Harman and Coach Chris Haack of Georgia all received recognition on Monday as the Southeastern Conference announced its 2006 men's golf awards.
Kirk was chosen as the SEC Player of the Year, Harman was picked as the SEC Freshman of the Year and Haack was named the SEC Coach of the Year in balloting conducting by the league's coaches. In addition, Kirk, Harman and Brendon Todd were named First-Team All-SEC and Kevin Kisner was chosen Second-Team All-SEC.
The Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the nation and have won five tournaments, including the SEC Championship last month.
"For Kirk and Harman, this is deserved recognition," Haack said. "They have been very steady, very consistent all year, so to see them honored in this way is exciting. I am also humbled to be named the SEC Coach of the Year. To me, it is a team award, and I share it with all the players and with (assistant coach) Ryan Hybl. The guys have made my job pretty easy."
Kirk leads the SEC with a 70.6 scoring average. The junior from Woodstock has eight top-10 showings this year, including a win at the Puerto Rico Classic and a third-place effort at the SEC Championship. Named First-Team All-SEC for the second straight year, Kirk is Georgia's fourth SEC Player of the Year, joining Peter Persons (1986), Jeremy Parrott (1998) and Nick Cassini (2001).
Harman, a native of Savannah, placed second at the SEC Championship and ranks third on the team with a scoring average of 72.5. Harman made his collegiate debut by tying for medalist honors at the Ping/Golfweek Preview, and he has five top-10 efforts overall. Harman is the fourth Bulldog named SEC Freshman of the Year, joining Mark Northey (1996), Kisner (2003) and Todd (2004).
