Baylor Edges Georgia Women's Tennis 4-3

MADISON, Wis. -- Eighth-ranked Baylor edged sixth-ranked Georgia 4-3 in a consolation match at the USTA-ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships here Friday.
The Bulldogs drop 2-2 on the year after their second straight day of falling 4-3. It was Baylor's first-ever win over the Bulldogs in seven tries dating back to 1986. On Thursday, No. 19 Harvard picked up its first win over Georgia in three attempts.
The Bears (4-1) won four singles matches to rally past Georgia who has notched the doubles point in all of its matches this year. While the Bulldogs swept all three doubles contests Saturday, they managed only two singles wins.
Baylor has three singles players ranked in the top 80, and they all emerged with wins. The Bears evened the match when Daniella Covello, ranked 80th, defeated Darya Ivanov, ranked 100th, 6-3,6-3 at number three singles. Then, Zuzana Zemenova, ranked 17th, beat Natalie Frazier, ranked 37th at number one 6-4,6-4. Georgia senior Evgenia Subbotina tied the match at 2-all with a comeback at number five. She knocked off Iva Mihaylova 1-6,6-0,6-4. However, Baylor picked up a three-set win at number two as ninth-ranked Suzana Cerna outlasted Shadisha Robinson 3-6,6-4,6-1 to give the Bears a 3-2 edge. Baylor clinched the match at number six when Zuzana Krchnakova beat Kelley Hyndman 7-5,6-1. In the final match at number four, Georgia's Caroline Basu battled back to defeat Klara Zrusutova 4-6,6-4,7-5.
The Bulldogs will play one more consolation match here Saturday against Northwestern at 10 a.m. ET. The fourth-ranked Wildcats (2-1) were the third seed here. The Wildcats were upset 5-2 by California Thursday and defeated 12th-ranked Kentucky 5-2 Friday.
