ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia's track and field teams begin competition today at the two-day Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Leading the Bulldogs to their fourth meet of the season is senior Chad McClendon, who was named the Southeastern Conference's Field Athlete of the Week this week.
McClendon, a Roswell native who is the nation's No. 11th-ranked competitor in his event according to Trackwire.com, was the first collegiate finisher (second overall) in the shot put at the Pepsi Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., last Saturday. His mark of 59-11.25 feet currently tops the SEC for the 2006 season.
McClendon and the rest of his Georgia teammates start their final tune-up meet before the SEC Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-26 - Gainesville, Fla.) today in Fayetteville. While McClendon is a favorite on the men's side, there are several competitors on the women's team who are also included in Trackwire's national Dandy Dozen list.
Junior Jennifer Dahlgren, who has the second-longest mark in the nation and the top mark in the SEC this year, is at the top of the list in the weight throw and freshman Levern Spencer is ranked fourth in the high jump. In addition, senior Jessica Stockard is the No. 10th-ranked heptathlon competitor.
Complete results from Georgia's meet on Friday and Saturday will be posted on georgiadogs.com.
