WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. --- Former Georgia standout Mary DeScenza won three races and finished as the high-point performer at the 2006 U.S. Open last weekend.

Robert Margalis, an ex-Bulldog as well, also won a race at the U.S. Open held at Boilermaker Aquatics Center on the Purdue campus.

DeScenza, a native of Naperville, Ill., won the women's 100- and 200-meter freestyle races and the 100-meter butterfly. Representing the Athens Bulldog Swim Club, DeScenza had times of 56.19 in the 100 free, 2:01.05 in the 200 free and 59.47 in the 100 fly.

I'm extremely happy," DeScenza said. "It's just a tribute to my training to (win three races). It shows I'm in a good place right now, and I'll be looking for better things in the future."

In the final event of the meet, Margalis, of Saint Petersburg, Fla., came out on top of the men's 1,500-meter free, turning in a time of 15:21.17.

"It was fun," Margalis said. "It was my best unshaved time for me ever, and I feel very happy with where I am in-season right now. I can't complain."
