Football: Georgia Set To Face Hokies
December 29, 2006 | Football
ATLANTA, Ga. --- Now all that’s left to do is play the game.
The 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl on Saturday at the Georgia Dome features 14th-ranked Virginia Tech versus the University of Georgia. Both teams concluded a weeklong slate of bowl practices, press conferences and activities here Friday.
Georgia coach Mark Richt along with Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer took part in a morning press conference Friday and provided final updates on their squads and the matchup.
“We arrived here to have a football game and to have fun, and we’ve had fun, and now it’s time to play football,” said Richt. “Hopefully, we will win by one point, hopefully we will score one point,” Richt said.
Defense along with special teams play have been the starting point for every discussion of this year’s bowl meeting between the Hokies (10-2) and Bulldogs (8-4). Both coaches said their teams went through similar regular seasons with a good start, followed by a rough patch and then finishing strong. The Hokies, featuring the nation’s top-ranked scoring defense, have won six straight games. The Bulldogs started out 5-0, then dropped four of their next five before concluding the year by upsetting fifth-ranked Auburn on the road and 16th-ranked Georgia Tech in Athens.
One of the more entertaining exchanges from the press conference came when Richt was asked about Georgia’s ability to win three games this season despite not scoring in the first half.
“Are you predicting we’re going to be shut out in the first half?” Richt asked and then quickly followed up with a grin saying, “I wouldn’t doubt it,” drawing laughter from the assembled media.
Meanwhile, a reporter reminded Beamer that the Hokies have never won back-to-back bowl games, and Saturday provided another opportunity to change that. Last year, the Hokies defeated Louisville in the Gator Bowl to finish 11-2.
Richt said he didn’t know that about Virginia Tech’s bowl history and Beamer replied, “I didn’t either until recently, but they can’t stop talking about it.”
Richt turned to Beamer and quipped, “So, this is your off year?”
Also on Friday, the teams attended a scholarship luncheon where 10 student-athletes from each school were honored along with numerous high school players and managers. Then, the school presidents from Georgia and Virginia Tech were presented with a $100,000 scholarship endowment check courtesy of the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Bulldogs took a team photo at the dome and then had a walk-through to complete their week of preparation.
Kickoff for the bowl game is scheduled for Saturday at 8:07 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN. All Georgia games are broadcast live on the Bulldog Radio Network on both AM 750 WSB in Atlanta and both 106.1 FM and 960 The Ref in Athens and also can be heard on georgiadogs.com, the official website of UGA Athletics.
