Georgia Tennis Dominates Southeast Regional Rankings
December 19, 2006 | Men's Tennis
Senior captain John Isner (Greensboro, N.C.), the reigning SEC Player of the Year and a three-time All-American, is the top-ranked singles player in the Southeast and teams with junior Luis Flores (Xalapa, Mexico) to lead the way in doubles as well. Flores, an All-American himself, also follows right behind Isner in the singles rankings, checking in at No. 2. Junior Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kansas) who transferred to Georgia in the summer after earning his second All-American appointment at Texas, rounds out the top five. Senior captain Matic Omerzel (Kranj, Slovenia) checks in at No.15.
In addition to Isner and Flores on the doubles list, Helgeson and Omerzel are rated No. 10. Right behind them at No. 11 are senior captain Ricardo Gonzalez (Aquadilla, Puerto Rico) and freshman Jamie Hunt (San Antonio, Texas).
The Southeastern Conference continues to make its case as one of the most competitive and challenging leagues in the nation as 24 of the top 30 players in the regional ranking come from the SEC. 10 of the SEC's 12 teams have at least one player listed, while eight of those have at least two. 12 of the doubles teams of the 15 that were ranked come from eight different SEC squads.
The first set of Fila/ITA National Collegiate Tennis Rankings will be released on Jan. 9, 2007, and will include team, individual singles and individual doubles rankings.
