December 19, 2006 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. --- Senior defender Catherine Bruce (Decatur, Ga.) of the University of Georgia soccer team has been named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Academic All-South Region performer. Bruce maintained a 3.74 GPA in Speech Communication while anchoring the Georgia defense as a central defender and team tri-captain.

“Catherine Bruce is one of the best student-athletes in the South,” said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker. “She really sets an example for all student-athletes of being able to play and produce on a regular basis on the field while maintaining her excellent performance in the classroom. I think when she looks back on her time here at Georgia, she will not only be able to take pride in being a part of change and getting this program turned into the right direction but I think she will be even more proud of her efforts in the classroom and how she has made her mark as a true student-athlete.”

Bruce is a two-time winner of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District award but this is her first honor from the NSCAA. The NSCAA South Region includes not only the Southeast, but is also inclusive of other large states such as Texas and Oklahoma.

Bruce is also a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. She was also named to the 2006 Director’s Academic Roundtable.

Bruce participated in graduation ceremonies on Friday, Dec. 15.
