Catherine Bruce Named First-Team Academic All-District
November 07, 2006 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- Senior defender Catherine Bruce (Decatur, Ga.) of the University of Georgia soccer team has been named an ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District III selection, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Bruce has now been named an Academic All-District III performer in two straight years as she was a third-team selection in 2005.
“I am very proud to receive this award,” said Bruce. “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized for my work in the classroom as well as on the field. It is incredibly difficult to balance school and soccer. You have to make a lot of sacrifices. Time is so precious and you are always busy. It is hard to figure out the best way to be successful at both. I take a great deal of pride in trying to be a well-rounded student-athlete.”
Bruce has maintained a GPA of 3.75 as a Speech Communications major. In addition to her Academic All-District accolades, Bruce has been an Academic All-SEC pick and a member of the Dean’s List. She was also a 2006 recipient of the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar award for women’s soccer.
“I am very happy for Catherine to be honored with such a fine award,” said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker. “Her commitment to academics and the game of soccer are to be commended. She sets a standard for others to aspire to and represents the true meaning of being a student-athlete. Catherine will be missed on and off the field.”
By way of her first-team selection, Bruce now advances to the National Academic All-America ballot.
