Catching Up With Georgia Cross Country's Caleb Vogt

November 06, 2006 | Cross Country

Caleb Vogt, who led his team to three cross country state championships at Winter Park High School (Fla.), was the Bulldogs' fifth and final scorer as the SEC Cross Country Championships in Baton Rouge, La., on Oct. 28. The 5-foot-11 freshman, who was a high school teammate with current Bulldog runner Coleman Hoover, placed in the top 25 in two different meets this season, taking 23rd at both of the meets hosted by Western Carolina.

Vogt is hoping to play a major role for Georgia at the NCAA South Regionals in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday, Nov. 11, and earn a trip to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 20. Here's what Vogt had to say when georgiadogs.com caught up with him:

On what his expectations were for himself going into his first SEC Championships:
"I went into the race knowing that I was going to feel good. I wasn't exactly sure just how well I was going to finish on the team though. During the race, Bejan (Abtahi) and I saw Charlie (Dickhaus) take a pretty hard fall around a corner just in front of us. Charlie, our number five man at the time, seemed to be struggling after his fall and started to drop back. I realized that someone needed to close the gap between our fourth and fifth guys or we were going to get beat badly. I just saw the opportunity and did my best to get the job done."

On how he feels the season has gone for the Georgia men in 2006:
"My first season on the team has been a great experience. Everyone on the team has an awesome time together at practice and away from practice. I
can't say that I have had any lows so far. Everything has gone quite well. Thankfully, I have not had any injuries - so far. Just being able to be a
part of the team has been an awesome time."

On what convinced him to choose Georgia as his college choice:
"I chose Georgia for a couple of different reasons. First, it is ranked in the top 60 in the nation academically. I knew that I could get a very good
education here. Second, Coach Dave Hartman is extremely knowledgeable about the sport. He is very personable and knows exactly how to get each athlete
to achieve his or her full potential. I knew that I could be a successful athlete here. Third, Georgia has miles upon miles of beautiful trails for
the team to run on. Being from Winter Park, I have never had the luxury of this many trails before. Fourth, the dorms at the East Campus Village are
extremely nice. It is wonderful to have my own room and full-size bed to get the rest that I need to be successful. Last, but certainly not least,
the food is awesome here."

On who from Georgia's cross country team has helped him the most this fall:
"Everyone on the team has been a big help in getting accustomed to the campus and to collegiate cross country. Although, if I had to choose just one, Ian Burrell has probably been the biggest help. He has quite a bit of knowledge from all of his experience and successes in college. Ian has been polite enough to share some of that knowledge with me in order for me to be more successful."

On what his plans for the future are at UGA and beyond:
"I am not exactly sure what I am going to do after I graduate. However, I'm sure God has the perfect plan for me, so I'm not too worried about it just yet. Right now, I am just trying to get through freshman year with good grades and some quality experience."
