November 20, 2006 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia junior pitcher Joshua Fields has been named a 2007 First Team Preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Fields, a 6-0, 180-pound native of Hull, Ga., is part of the All-America team that features eight pitchers including three relievers and 10 position players. Fields led the Southeastern Conference in 2006 with a school record-tying 15 saves in helping Georgia advance to the College Series. He posted a 3-2 mark and 1.80 ERA. In 35 appearances, Fields struck out 56 with only 11 walks in 50 innings pitched. At the conclusions of the 2006 season, he was named a second team NCBWA All-American and a third team All-America selection by Baseball America.
“This is a tremendous honor for Joshua and well deserved,” said Georgia head coach David Perno. “He had an excellent sophomore year as one of the nation’s best closers. We’re excited about the upcoming season and looking forward to another super year from him.
Fields is the first Bulldog to be named an NCBWA pre-season All-American since 2005 when pitcher Will Startup and first baseman Josh Morris were chosen for this honor. Preseason All-Americans give a sneak peek to those who may be in contention for the prestigious 21st annual Dick Howser Trophy, voted upon by NCBWA members and awarded annually in Omaha, Neb., prior to the NCAA World Series.
Fields is joined on the 2007 team by UC-Irvine senior reliever Blair Erickson (5-0, 2.06 ERA, 14 Saves) and Army junior reliever Milan Dinga (2-0, 0.48, 10 Saves). The starting pitchers are Cal State Fullerton junior Wes Roemer (13-2, 2.38), Rice junior Cole St. Clair (7-2, 1.82), TCU junior Jake Arrieta (14-4, 2.35), Nebraska junior Tony Watson (10-2, 2.78) and Arkansas junior Nick Schmidt (9-3, 3.01).
The Bulldogs open the season with a three-gamer series against defending national champion Oregon State starting Feb. 9 in Athens.
