Christy Marshall Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

November 20, 2006 | Women's Basketball

Athens, Ga. --- Georgia’s Christy Marshall was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday after reaching double digits in a pair of Lady Bulldog wins last week.

Marshall averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in Georgia’s wins over North Carolina A&T and Davidson during the previous week. She reached double figures for the first time in her young career with 10 points against N.C. A&T and followed that with a strong 16-point outing versus Davidson. Versus the Wildcats, Marshall connected on a pair of consecutive jumpers midway through the second half to give Georgia a lead it would never relinquish.

“Christy obviously played well,” Andy Landers said. “I thought she played well in the Rutgers game, too. She’s had three very solid basketball games, and the part of Christi’s play that impresses me the most is not necessarily the plays she has made but the decision making she’s exercised in the course of all three games. She’s made important decisions in not trying to score that were equally important to the decisions she made which led to her scoring.”

Marshall joined classmate Ashley Houts to give the Lady Bulldogs a sweep of the honor during the first two weeks of the 2006-07 campaign.

Houts was the SEC Freshman of the Week on Nov. 13, less than 24 hours after she led Georgia to victory over No. 11 Rutgers in the Lady Bulldogs’ nationally televised season opener. Houts posted game-high tallies of 18 points, seven assist and five steals on espn2. Her seven assists resulted in 18 more points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Houts and Marshall became Georgia’s first recipients of the honor, which was instituted by the league office last season. The Lady Bulldog also became the first teammates to receive the accolade in consecutive weeks.

Georgia travels to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern on Tuesday night before hosting Stanford in a matchup of perennial top-10 powerhouses at Stegeman Coliseum on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
