Kevin Brophy Memorial Scholarship Founded
November 14, 2006 | Men's Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia Athletic Association has begun the development of the Kevin Brophy Memorial Basketball Scholarship to honor the memory of the Bulldog basketball player who died last July in an automobile accident, head coach Dennis Felton announced today.
With the announcement today of the scholarship, the UGAA intends to raise $150,000 toward the endowment of the athletic grant-in-aid. The Hoop Girls, UGA’s student support group for the basketball team, will start the fund-raising drive when they present a check for over $7,400 at the Georgia-Western Kentucky game Tuesday night. The money was raised by the proceeds from the inaugural “Do It For Broph!” 5K walk/run on Nov. 5.
“I am very excited and honored to announce the Kevin Brophy Memorial Basketball Scholarship,” Felton said. “Kevin left a tremendous legacy during his brief time in our lives, and to honor that legacy with a scholarship in his name is a truly significant gesture. Through the scholarship, the players that follow in Kevin’s footsteps as Bulldog basketball players will always remember the impact he made on this campus and in this program.”
For anyone wishing to make a donation to the Kevin Brophy Memorial Basketball Scholarship endowment, checks should be made to the University of Georgia Arch Foundation. Please attach a note stating that it be donated to the Kevin Brophy Memorial Basketball Scholarship and send it to the Georgia Bulldog Club, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, GA 30603.
For more information on the endowment, please call 877-GA-Dawgs or (706) 542-9220.
In addition to donations, the Hoop Girls will be selling “Do It For Broph” spirit bands on campus and at home basketball games. The bands are $3 apiece and all proceeds will go toward the scholarship.
Brophy, a native of Melbourne, Australia, came to America as an exchange student in high school. He joined the Bulldog basketball program as a walk-on in the summer of 2005 but earned an athletic scholarship by the start of his sophomore season. He lost his life in an automobile accident last July 20, as he was driving from Athens to Savannah.
