ATHENS, Ga. --- Swimmers Lauren Cartwright and Martin Kata have signed national letters-of-intent with Georgia, according to an announcement made Monday by Coach Jack Bauerle.
Cartwright, a native of Fayetteville, attends Starrs Mill High School and swims for Coach Jamey Meyers on the Southern Crescent Aquatic Team. Cartwright has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 200-meter individual medley and for the U.S. National Championship in the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 IM. She is one of the top 10 IM and fly prospects in the nation. Cartwright also has a 3.9 grade-point average and has been chosen as an Academic All-American.
"Lauren is a terrific athlete and a great kid," Bauerle said. "She will bring an awful lot to our program in terms of energy and attitude. She¹s an up-and-comer. She will play a very important role for us next year, and she'll help us do big things."
Kata hails from Martinez, where he attends Evans High School and swims for Coach Kristen Schlegel in the Aiken/Augusta Swim League. Kata was chosen as the Most Valuable Swimmer and the Male High-Point Winner at the Georgia Senior State Championship. He is one of the top 10 IM prospects nationally. Kata could contribute in as many as nine different events at the collegiate level.
"Martin is about as versatile as you can get," Bauerle said. "He can do just about anything you ask him to do. He's a top-flight swimmer, and we're looking forward to having him help us in many areas. We are really excited about his future in the sport."
