Bulldogs Fall To Florida, 21-14

October 28, 2006 | Football

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Junior wide receiver Andre Caldwell scored two first half-touchdowns and Georgia had five turnovers as No. 9 Florida Gators defeated the Bulldogs 21-14 on Saturday at Alltel Stadium.

Each of the last five meetings between these teams have been decided by seven points or less with Gators winning four times.

Florida raced out to a 21-0 lead but second-half rushing touchdowns by Matthew Stafford and Kregg Lumpkin pulled the Bulldogs within seven.  Lumpkin’s score came in the fourth quarter, the first fourth-quarter touchdown allowed by the Gators this year.

With the win, Florida improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference, while the Bulldogs fell to 6-3 and 3-3.

““It comes down to this,” said head coach Mark Richt.  “We turned it over five times again and you just won’t beat anyone doing that.  I don’t feel good about this.  I don’t enjoy losing to the Gators.  But I will say this, when most teams would lie down and die, this team didn’t.  We’ve got some guys with great character.  I’m proud of them and proud to be a Bulldog.”

Stafford finished the game 13-for-33 for 151 yards and two interceptions in his fourth career start.  Lumpkin was Georgia’s leading rusher with 43 yards on 11 carries.  Fullback Brannan Southland finished the game with three receptions for 31 yards while receiver Mikey Henderson had three grabs for 20 yards.

Georgia returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Kentucky.  The game is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
