Top-ranked Bulldogs slip to third in team field

PALO ALTO, Calif. --- Georgia’s Whitney Wade followed her career-best round on Friday with another under-par effort on Saturday to gain sole ownership of the individual lead at the Stanford Intercollegiate. Wade, who was tied for first after a 4-under 67 in the first round, shot 69 in the second round to push her to 6-under and give her a two-shot lead entering the final round.

As a team, the top-ranked Bulldogs posted a 2-over 286 but fell from second to third place in the 15-team field. No. 6 Stanford, which entered the day in third, carded a 6-under 278 to move atop the team leaderboard at 4-under 564. No. 12 Arizona is second at 569. The Dogs are a shot back of the Wildcats and six behind the Cardinal at 570.

“We played a really solid round today,” head coach Todd McCorkle said. “My hat’s off to Stanford. They played just a great round on their home course. Quite honestly, I think they’ll be tough to catch. We’re going to have to play very well. But I think our team has a confidence. In our minds, we think we’re the best team in the field. You can’t take that away from us. You either believe it or you don’t. That’s the way we feel, and we’ll give it our best shot tomorrow.”

Stanford, Arizona and Georgia have distanced themselves from the rest of the field. No. 9 Vanderbilt is 10 shots behind Georgia in fourth. Rounding out the top 10 are No. 15 and No. 2 Duke at 585, Washington State at 591, Oregon at 592, No. 3 UCLA at 594 and No. 21 Arkansas at 596.

The Bulldogs’ other counting scores included an even-par 71 from Alina Lee, a 72 from Taylor Leon and a 74 from Garrett Phillips. Mallory Hetzel finished with a 75.

Overall, Leon is tied for eigth at 1-under 141, Hetzel and Lee are tied for 25th at 147 and Phillips is tied for 38th at 150.

Wade, a senior from Glasgow, Ky., bogeyed the first hole but birdied No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7 to make the turn at 2-under. Another birdie on No. 12 pushed her to 3-under before a bogey on No. 18 to finish the day.

“Whitney is playing great,” McCorkle said. “She’s hitting the ball well and managing her game well. This is a very difficult golf course, and she’s put herself in position to pick up a win tomorrow if she can control her emotions and hit it one shot at a time.”

A two-time All-American, Wade will be looking for her first collegiate win on Sunday. She finished as individual runner-up at the Cougar Classic last fall and at the Lady Paladin as a freshman in the fall 2003.

Three-hole live scoring for Sunday’s final round will be available on the internet at www.golfstat.com
