October 13, 2006 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia volleyball team outlasted Mississippi State 3-2 (30-20, 25-30, 30-26, 28-30, 15-9) and tallied its first Southeastern Conference victory in thrilling fashion on Friday night.
The Bulldogs (5-14, 1-8 SEC) , who had four players with double figures in digs, won in their first of two weekend matches in Athens for their fifth win of the season. Mississippi State dropped to 11-8, 2-7 on the year.
Maria Taylor led Georgia with 19 kills in the match. Josephine Ehmke, who is the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, registered a career-high 13 kills and Brooke Peugh (12) was close behind, while hitting at clips of .379 and .409, respectively.
In her first game of the season as the lone setter, junior Chelsea Young set a season-high in assists with 47. She added 12 digs as well to give her a double-double along with Taylor, who recorded 17 digs. Libero Brooke Burlingame recorded 19 digs to lead the team.
Eva Kriegel led Mississippi State in assists with 40, while also picking up a triple-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. It was the senior’s second triple-double of the season.
Georgia came out with high intensity to open the match, taking game one in commanding fashion 30-20. That score marked the largest margin of victory the Bulldogs have recorded this season in SEC play.
Georgia could not do the same in game two, however, as the team allowed a three-point lead midway through the game slip away. Mississippi State evened the match at 1-all with a 30-25 victory.
Georgia regrouped and came out of the locker room to grab a 30-26 advantage in game three. The Bulldogs trailed only once in the game at 18-17, but maintained control of the game and picked up the win.
Georgia fell behind in game four at 20-13 and it looked as if Mississippi State would come away with a worry-free fourth game. However, the Bulldogs fought back and were within one point at 29-28, but Mississippi State was able to close out the game and send it to a decisive fifth game.
The fifth game was dominated by Georgia early, as the Bulldogs jumped to an 8-3 lead when the teams switched sides. Mississippi State scored several more points, but Georgia came out with the 15-9 final score to clinch the match.
The Bulldogs will look to win their second match in a row on Sunday at 2 p.m. as they face Ole Miss at the Ramsey Center.
