ATHENS, Ga. --- Sam Mrvos, a former Georgia football player and coach, died Wednesday in a single-car accident in Oconee County. He was 76.
A native of McKeesport, Pa., Mrvos lettered as a kicker and offensive lineman for the Bulldogs from 1951-53. His 21-yard field goal provided the margin of victory in the 1953 win against Tulane.
Mrvos later served on the Georgia coaching staff as kicking coach, assistant defensive line coach and scout team coach. He also worked as the athletic weight coach for all Georgia sports other than football. He spent two decades in the University's Physical Education Department.
Mrvos is survived by his wife Reba and their sons, George, Mitch, and Nick.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Reba and the family on the tragic loss of Sam," former Georgia football coach and AD Vince Dooley said. "Coach Mrvos was a tremendous help in getting us started in the early years at Georgia as the B-team and weight training coach. I remember he and Reba were newlyweds when we went to the Sun Bowl that very first year, and she was expecting their first child, George. We all have wonderful, special memories of Sam. Our hearts really go out to Reba and the family."
