January 07, 2006 | Swimming & Diving
"This was a job well-done by our kids," Coach Jack Bauerle said. "SMU was a whole different kind of challenge for us. Outside of Florida, this was probably this was one of our biggest challenges all year. But we still need to get better since we're not swimming like a No. 1-ranked team now."
Mary DeScenza and Kara Lynn Joyce were double winners for the Lady Bulldogs, who improved to 7-0. DeScenza clocked a time of 1:47.89 in the 200 free to win the event and also won the 200 fly with a mark of 2:00.18. Joyce finished first in the 50 free with a mark of 23.10 and also won the 100 free after finishing in 50.26.
In the 200 medley relay, Tricia Harm, Sarah Poewe, DeScenza and Joyce won with a mark of 1:42.54. Harm won the 100 backstroke with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 56.09, which was her fastest finish of the season. In the 100 breaststroke, Poewe finished in 1:02.68 and won the race.
In the 3-meter dive, Emily Hunter registered a score of 268.75 in the prelims of the Georgia Diving Invitational and her score was applied to the dual meet with SMU. Haley Chura won the 200 back with a mark of 2:00.28.
Going into an away meet next week, Bauerle was pleased his team extended its streak to 49 straight dual-meet wins at home.
"I was proud they defended our home turf again today," Bauerle said. "Now we have to get prepared for a tough one in Austin."
Georgia will return to action next Saturday at Texas.
