Gym Dogs Host Arkansas in SEC Action
Georgia is back in Stegeman Coliseum for the second straight week as the No. 24 Arkansas Razorbacks come to Athens for just the second time.
The Gym Dogs are coming off a win over Maryland last Saturday which helped freshman Courtney Kupets to the SEC's Gymnast of the Week award. Kupets won the all-around during the meet with a career-high 39.475 including wins on bars (9.95) and floor (9.9). The vault and beam events were won by another Georgia freshman, Tiffany Tolnay, who scored a pair of 9.9s to win those events. Tolany has been Georgia¹s high scorer on vault and beam in each of the first two meets of the year. Sophomore Katie Heenan is also off to a quick start for the Gym Dogs, winning the all-around in Cancun and placing second in the Maryland meet. She is currently No. 1 in the nation on the floor exercise.
After a week as the No. 2 team in the country, Georgia has reclaimed its preseason spot at the top of the rankings. Week three rankings initially had the Gym Dogs listed as No. 3 by their high score against the Terps, but the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches last summer passed a resolution for rankings to be determined by teams¹ average scores through the first seven weeks of the season, vaulting the team back to No. 1. This is Georgia's first regular season No. 1 ranking since March 11, 2002.
Last week Arkansas lost at No. 14 Missouri, posting a score of 192.225. That score was better than the Lady Razorbacks' opener in Hawaii as they improved their totals on three of four events.
Georgia Always Tough at Home
Stegeman Coliseum has provided the Gym Dogs with an extra edge for years. Just last week Georgia hosted a crowd of 9,323 in the home opener against Maryland, as the Gym Dogs finished with their largest margin of victory since 1998 (195.825-188.3). Since 1991 Georgia has won 72 of its last 76 regular-season meets at home including its only meeting with Arkansas in 2004.
