ATHENS, Ga. - University of Georgia women's soccer head coach Patrick Baker has announced the signing of junior transfer Ashley Stinson from Virginia Tech. Stinson, originally from Acworth, Ga., was the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. She is currently enrolled in spring classes at Georgia and will be eligible to participate in both spring workouts and the 2006 regular season.
"We are very excited about Ashley joining our program," said Baker. She will help our front line immediately and her experiences in the ACC are invaluable. Ashley had the benefit of playing for a great coaching staff at Virginia Tech and won one of the highest individual awards in 2003. "
"I'm definitely excited to be here," said Stinson. "There are a lot of great things to look forward to with this team. This team had a really good season this year and Coach Baker is an unbelievable coach. There are still some things we can improve on and hopefully I can contribute to making this coming year another very good one. Hopefully I can help make people believe that this past year was not a fluke and that we will continue to have success in the future. I'm very happy to be wearing the red and black."
In her freshman campaign for the Hokies Stinson played in 19 games, starting 18 of them as a forward. Eventually earning team MVP honors, she scored 17 goals and assisted on five others for a total of 39 points. Undergoing successful knee surgery in the offseason, Stinson came back to VT to score three more goals and assist on one other in her sophomore year of 2005.
Stinson is a product of North Cobb High School where she holds the career record for goals with 78, the single-season scoring record with 28 goals and the single-season assist record with 18 helpers. She played club soccer for the United Quest Red `85's, helping them to five straight State Cup championships.
