HANAHAN, S.C. --- Junior Whitney Wade and freshmen Mallory Hetzel and Taylor Leon all posted top-five individual finishes in the season-opening Cougar Classic on Monday, leading Georgia to a runner-up effort in the team competition at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club.
Wade finished second overall at 1-under 215, while Hetzel and Leon tied for third at 1-over 217.
"It's disappointing not to win, but I'm surely not disappointed with the way we played," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "I'm very proud of the way we battled down the stretch. We just came up a bit short."
Tennessee swept the team and individual titles. Marci Turner shot 5-under 67 Monday and finished at 4-under 215. That effort helped the Lady Vols hold off the Bulldogs, 870-872, to capture the team title. Both teams posted scores of 1-over 289 in the final round.
"That's the thing about golf, you can't play defense," McCorkle said.
"Hat's off to Tennessee. They played a great round of golf today."
Following Tennessee and Georgia, Vanderbilt was third at 882, followed by Auburn (884), Virginia (886), N.C. State (894), LSU (897) and North Carolina (889).
Georgia counted three 72s and a 73 on Monday. Hetzel, Wade and Lisa Tyler all shot even par for the Bulldogs, while Leon and freshman Alina Lee both posted 73s.
