COLLEGE STATION, Texas --- The No. 1 ranked University of Georgia team of sophomore John Isner and junior Antonio Ruiz defeated Rohan Gajjar and Adrians Zguns of Arkansas Friday afternoon, 6-3, 6-4, in the Round of 16 of the Men's NCAA Doubles Championship at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Complex.
"I think we played a lot better today," said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. "They played a very solid match. Antonio returned very well and they both volleyed better. He and John played better defense overall. Antonio's shoulder felt a bit better today, but now John is hampered by a stomach muscle injury from Thursday. We are not at 100% right now but we are scrapping. We are concentrating much better, have good focus and are really playing every point."
In Saturday's quarterfinal match, Isner and Ruiz will face a team from instate rival Georgia Tech, as they face off against Marko Rajevac and David North. The two teams met once in the regular season during Georgia's 5-2 team victory at Tech, as Isner and Ruiz found themselves on the winning end of a 9-7 decision.
Rajevac and North advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(5) win over Dmitriy Koch and Albert Sottocorno of Tulane.
The quarterfinal contest will be played at 12 p.m. CST on Saturday. Fans can follow all of the action on the internet through live scoring provided by the host site. Visit www.aggieathletics.com and click on the 2005 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship banner on the right hand side of the page.
